The name Glottiphyllum is derived from latin and refers to the tongue-shaped leaves of these mesembs although in one local language, the vernacular name translates to tortoise fodder The plant pictured here is still rather small but it is flowering because it was grown from a stem cutting instead of seeds. This species of mesembs are very easy to grow and although the leaves are easily damaged, they are spectacular when they are larger.
If you have a hot, dry climate and don't over water them, these can be grown in a soil mix with a high proportion of potting soil, many mesembs do prefer a fairly organic soil mix although it all depends on local growing conditions.
