A couple of years ago I was asked to crew on a sailboat bound for Ensenada, Mexico from Vancouver, B.C. We had the misfortune of an accidental jibe off Cape Mendocino, resulting in the reconfiguration of the main boom into the shape of an ”L”.
Able to make our way into San Francisco Harbour under jury rig, we were fortunate to be welcomed to a berth at the Sausalito Cruising Club. The members, seeing our predicament, jumped into action and offered their local knowledge of riggers, chandleries and even the use of cars on more than one occasion. Enough cannot be said about the hospitality shown by our fellow sailors of this historical club.
One afternoon Ken, my fellow shipmate, and I went exploring on foot and came across this sculpture at which point I insisted he step up and have his picture taken, resulting in this #colorfulphotograph.
I spent another ten days or so with the boat trying to find a used spar that could be altered for use on the vessel. Eventually I had to return to Vancouver to take care of some business. A new extrusion had to be ordered from back east and the boat continued on it’s way.
San Francisco is fantastic city and I especially love Sausalito. If you ever make it there by boat I highly recommend a visit to the Sausalito Cruising Club. You won’t be disappointed.
Thanks for viewing my post. Have a great day!
