Egykor vidéken a lányokat a kúthoz, vályúhoz vitték, és vödörrel leöntötték, de a népszokás ma is, városi környezetben is tovább él. Eredetére nézve termékenységvarázsló célzatú, illetve a víz tisztító hatására is utal. A legények a locsolásért piros vagy hímes tojást kapnak a lányoktól.
