The hawk had the advantage of flight, but could not stay airborne forever. It was also simply not equipped to kill the bonobo with only it's beak and talons. The bonobo conserved energy, waiting for the hawk to land before moving just enough to harass it into taking flight again. Eventually the hawk was too tired to take off, and the bonobo crushed it in it's powerful grip.
