I've been aware of comedian Richard Herring for many years. He's had various TV series with fellow comic Stuart Lee, but isn't on TV so much these days. I have been enjoying his podcasts where he interviews other comedians over the last few years. I'd been thinking I should attend one of the recordings, but not gotten around to it yet. However he did have a gig at the nearby Stables last night and we went along with some friends.
The Stables is a nice little venue. There were probably about 150 there last night. As with a lot of events we go to it seemed to be a largely white and middle class group, but that's partly due to who lives around here. It was a nice surprise to get a proper programme with various articles about his life and some funny stuff. He asked for charity donations for these. I expect he does okay from his hectic performing schedule and the various merchandise he sells, but he's not going to be making the money that others who are always on the TV will get.
As the show title suggests he is reflecting on reaching 50. He's only recently got married and had kids, but being around the same age there was lots that resonated with us. Lots of stuff about the body going wrong and some nostalgia about stuff we had as kids. He's spoken about some of these on the podcast, so I knew what to expect. He does swear a lot and I think some people are not so keen on that. He admits he's childish, but it can be good to retain some of that. Too many people are too serious all the time.
Some of it was actually quite thoughtful when he got onto thinking about how little time we may have and how we might be remembered, but a lot of it was just silly stuff.
We really enjoyed the show. I could have queued up to meet him and get an autograph or a photo, but we had to get home. I will look at getting to a podcast show some time.
Here's a sample of the show at another venue.
