Yeah Comixology... you got me. Email me a good coupon and I'll add to my growing digital library... twist my arm why don't you.
I constantly battle with how to allocate my hard earned dollars when it comes to my comic reading (& collecting) habits. There is an overabundance of choice these days, not only in the stories being told, but also in exactly how they are offered for sale. Should I buy monthly comic book "floppies" as they come out? Should I wait for the bookshelf collection of the entire story? Should I purchase a digital version to read on my iPad? Should I subscribe to an "all you can read" type service like Marvel Unlimited or Comixology Unlimited?
The answer is... Yes. I end up doing all of these things because each format has its own pros and cons, and quite frankly I just can't decide. For some works I really like... I've actually bought the individual issues, digital issues, and hardcover bookshelf collection. (I'm looking at you Skybourne...) I subscribe to both Marvel and Comixology Unlimited. And the sad thing is... I don't spend nearly enough time actually reading them when all is said and done!
With that being said, let's look at what Comixology roped me into adding to my virtual shelves most recently. For being a Comixology Unlimited member, I received a coupon for $10 off a purchase of $20 or more. Comixology also runs regular sales which can be real deals in their own right... and these things stacked together. So... I raided some of the selection of collections on sale to reach that $20 requirement and came away with a great batch of reading for just under $12.
Of these, the only one I have read and own in another form is most of the content in the Tellos compendium. I shop for a variety of factors, story being one of them but I'm also very drawn to certain artists, in this case that being Roberta Ingranata's work on Witchblade. I've never followed the character but even if I don't dig the story her work is worth the price of admission. I've even begun to shop a bit based on colorists as I'm working to improve my own color skills creating a comic entitled, "I Thought It Would Be Zombies..." Being an artist myself, this is one of the benefits of digital editions. They're easy to find reference or inspiration from, and in the case of colors... it really helps me analyze and apply the color palettes these artists are using in my own attempts. And obviously you can carry around a room full of books in a 1 pound tablet. That's convenient!
So fellow geeks and comic fans... what have you read of these? What piques your interest? And what formats do you prefer to consume your fantastic adventures in?!? For those new to the world of comics, I do highly recommend subscription services like Comixology Unlimited and Marvel Unlimited if you have access to them. They are without a doubt some of the best bang for your buck out there when it comes to reading comics. Check 'em out or as always feel free to ask me any questions about them in the comments!
