Although he worked for the company even longer, Chris Claremont scripted his first story for Marvel Comics in 1973 when he wrote the story for Daredevil #102. He is most famous for his unprecedented tenure with the Uncanny X-Men series. He was so associated with the X-Men that he made cameo appearances in a few of their movies. Some of his co-creations include Captain Britain, Excalibur, the New Mutants and Wolverine. In addition, Claremont has developed some very strong female characters that include Rogue, Psylocke and Mystique.
I had to check out his anniversary special that recently hit the racks at the comic book stores. This one-shot, obviously written by Claremont, is basically a test being given to Danielle Moonstar by Hela. Moonstar is seen beautifying her stallion Brightwind at Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters in New York. Brightwind is believed to give Moonstar a connection with the Valkyries.
Moonstar's first leg of the journey takes her to the Baxter Building, home of the Fantastic Four. A very confusing battle is taking place here as the Fantastic Four is doing battle with different versions of themselves. As a matter of fact, one version of Reed Richards has taken on the appearance of Doctor Doom. It was very interesting to see that each version of the same character had different power levels when it came to their abilities.
Moonstar also ends up in San Francisco and New Orleans having to faceoff against Rogue and Gambit. She also viewed Carol Danvers ready to give up her hero gig. Each step of the way, Moonstar becomes more and more closer to being a Valkyrie. At one point, she declares "I'm Cheyenne! Warrior-Daughter of the First People." This hero coming into their own story was beautifully pencilled by Bill Sienkiewicz, Sean Chen, Diego Olortegui and Brett Booth. It is definitely a smart way for this legend to showcase his Marvel history!
