Once upon a time, there was a team of superheroes known as X-Statix. Little did any member of this unit know, really good life insurance should have been a requirement! Their many missions have led to death among some members. Their adventures were brought to the public, gaining them celebrity status, as well as many fans. Obviously, hero membership was a revolving door. Eventually, they broke up.
That lasted until U-Go Girl's daughter, Katie Jones, discovered that she has the ability to teleport. This brought out the surviving members of X-Statix from retirement. Her abilities also came to the attention of a new band of mutants known as the X-Cellent. This story takes off in Marvel's The X-Cellent #1. Unlike the majority of Marvel's catalogue, this issue comes with a Parental Advisory warning. (Move over Deadpool.)
X-Statix TV is back in full swing, giving them the ability to reenact their battles with anyone, including the X-Cellent. Not too familiar with this group, I just hope that they are better defenders of justice than they are actors. It kind of almost reminds me of the same premise behind The Boys, except this group is weirder. I still think it's funny watching a superhero following their social media hits online.
Peter Milligan brings us this story, with Michael "Doc" Allred bringing us the artwork. Laura Allred handles the colors, while Nate Piekos of Blambot Studios gives us the lettering. The panels are very crisp and emotive. While Rosa Lemper arrives on the scene as a new recruit for X-Statix, it appears that the team is going to have to mourn the loss of The A. This is a shame because I was beginning to get invested in this character, especially with his ability to turn into a werewolf without needing a full moon or the evening sky. This was an intriguing first issue and I look forward to seeing how the storylines develop.
