There is a new Fantastic Four, but not really. Very briefly, this new Fantastic Four showed up many moons ago for approximately 3 issues. Until now, that is ! It appears that Editor Martin Biro was tasked with the job of putting together a team to continue the adventures of a Fantastic Four, which included Spider-Man, Wolverine, The Hulk and Ghost Rider. These four very different heroes joined forces when the original four were captured. Peter David handles the story, while Alan Robinson and Mike Spicer create the images and color.
The story begins years ago, as a nun prepares to give a confession of major proportions to a priest. She even quotes the Bible about lust. According to the priest, the usual penance just won't do. What happens next hasn't been revealed just yet because we switch to present day Las Vegas. Here, we witness a priest, whose last name just happens to be Priest, reading a newspaper about the success of the New Fantastic Four against monsters.
There are many people living under the streets of Vegas and they are beginning to change their behavior. Many are starting to become very violent. A Mr. Ash has entered their space and is polluting their minds. When Father Priest finds him, he can see this demon in his true form. Almost as if his prayers are answered the New Fantastic Four feel a calling to go to Vegas. As soon as they arrive, our heroes face an angry mob.
After coming face-to-face with the demon, Father Priest is transported to Reno, while Spider-Man, Wolverine and The Hulk end up in New York City, much to the surprise of the Human Torch. Meanwhile, Ghost Rider is left to face Ash alone. Being a #1 issue, it got into the meat of the story very quickly. Nick Bradshaw and Morry Hollowell's cover is awesome. While possessing a modern feel to the layout, the artwork appears to be a throwback to some of the stylized older comics. Biro promises some major surprises in the upcoming issues, so it may be worth it to stick with this title awhile longer. It's hard not thinking of "Clobberin' Time" with the Fantastic Four.
