Commonwealth Games
The Commonwealth Games are coming to my hometown, the Gold Coast, in April this year. It's an exciting time for most of the locals but I am pretty apprehensive about how it is going to affect my daily life. The population of the Gold Coast is expected to double during the games and approximately 6 million more trips via car and public transport are expected to occur over the 2 weeks of the games.
Our infrastructure, including roads and rail, are already stretched to capacity so the addition of another 400 million people travelling about the coast is expected to result in traffic chaos.
How is this going to affect me?
Luckily I will be on holidays during the games so I could curl up in bed and watch movies for 2 weeks and grow the biggest man boobs known to..... man! Usually I travel 10 minutes to the beach for a surf, however, during the games, I will have to add another hour or more to my trip as road closures block my direct access to the beach.
I live right smack bang in the middle of one of the main centres of Commonwealth Games action. I am near the Hockey Centre, Lawn Bowls training facility and Commonwealth Games village. I have been informed that my normal 5 minute trip to take my daughter to daycare will most likely take 30+ minutes as the street to daycare is turned into a gigantic bus stop for the games village.
Now don't get me wrong, I think that the games are a great thing for the Gold Coast when it comes to tourism and showcasing the coast in all it's glory. However the Olympics Poorer cousin (Commonwealth Games) is going to cause a major headache for many locals so I think I might bugger off and go camping for a while to get away from the craziness!
