I finally decided to buzz on over to the Hive. Better late than never.... right ?
I recently inherited one of my Great Grandmother Webster's tea cups.
When she passed many years ago, her grown children split up her china and crystal. Each one took a few pieces.
Back in the day, here in the south, baby showers and wedding showers and other such things, always called for your best dishes for serving.
All the women dressed up in their Sunday best and there were tea cakes and mints, cocktail peanuts and delicate pecan fingers, all set out on matching serving pieces.....and there was punch.... always punch.
It was a big deal !.... and fancy.... and not just for the well-to-do, but traditionally through most any close southern families.
My Grandmother Ida was the oldest child in that family. Since this tea cup (and some other matching pieces) was part of her share, she put her name on the bottom ! LOL ! She did this to many things and not just when she was older. If you gave her something, she would put your name on the bottom, maybe so she could remember who gave it, but also, so they could take it back when she was gone.
I had to stop and take a moment to smile back on that.
This passed from my Great Grandmother Lenore, to her daughter Ida (my mother's mother) and then to my mother (Jeanne) not so many years back. Recently my mother asked me if I would like to have it. She had a few different pieces and had already given my older sister Vicky first choice of items. Vicky had taken a dinner plate, I'm betting to serve cake off of when the cousins get together. Anyway.... I chose the cup and saucer from what was left.
I believe there was a LOT of this style back in the day.
So sweet and delicate with it's bright pink roses and gold rimmed pieces.
This is a picture of my Great Grandmother Lenore and Great Grandpa Carey in their older years. I think they were really catbirds in their younger years.
At some point I will probably try to find a way to display them in my kitchen. I can't imagine using it myself a lot, but I may have to have a nice cup of tea out of them one time.....just to say I did. 🙂
