One of the best ways to keep people from something, is to make them fear it, to associate it with evil or wrong doing. This has been done with Freemasonry like mad over the last 100 years, but especially since the internet age.

In order to become a Freemason, the only major qualifier is that you have to have a belief in a supreme being or power. They dont care if you are Muslim, Christian, Jewish, Buddhist or whatever. They agreed that government was inherently evil, and thus, since it is necessary, it should be as small as possible. So when you see the way our United States seeks to expand and police the world, you see the same issues they fought against.
