The image shown to us in movies and books about leaders is to appeal to our morals of right and wrong, how we believe things should be. It's funny how Hollywood knows the type of person we can believe in, and yet John Keating (Dead poets), Maximus (Gladiator) and even John McClane (couldn't resist) are the opposite of what we actually have. The hero leads by example. He or she is almost unshakable in their goal.
People will follow true leaders. Real life heroes like Martin Luther King, Ghandi or Rosa Parks knew a part of society was not fair and put their very lives on the line to prove it. They earned their followers by having something to believe in. They had the support from the people who felt the same because they showed their incorruptible nature through their actions.
Now, let's look at today's equivalent of who should be our heroes, the very leaders of our ideals in society. What? hang on..... they are the exact opposite of the archetype we would willingly pay to see. They plainly lie, if you haven't noticed it every other day, just look at their promises before election and see how that stacks up. They don't lead by example, they get paid a small fortune to work in the public interest announcing they should be paid this for their mountains of experience, and yet there are stories every day of incompetence, wasting of vast sums or rorting the system. What type of experience are we paying for exactly? They wipe the sweat and hard work from their chiseled features by accessing more holiday time than you or I, and obtaining more perks for good measure. Hmmmm.
Why is it we are forced to ally ourselves with these groups that rule by decree? I don't want any of them.... and yet I am forced to pay for them while they dodder about trying to cut welfare and pensions so they might vote in that pay rise they wanted this year. Don't start down the 'democratically elected process' road though, you might as well have Stalin and Hitler up there and say the same, also expecting the loser to police the winners policies. These are not heroes, they do not lead. They tell us what to do and we pay them for the privilege of the very enforcement of those rules.
I sadly know exactly what will happen at the next election time though. My current local politician whom I have never before laid eyes on will turn up at my door, they will probably mumble off some well worn words describing how they will help save local jobs, more money for schools, improving roads.....can they count on my vote? Yea, I thought so... same old rhetoric and the sad part is, we already know its mostly lies.
However, I can tell you now, if a certain William Wallace drove up to my door with a clipboard in hand proclaiming he was all about bringing back true freedom and privacy to the people and he would rather be hung, drawn and quartered than back down on these measures, I might just be grabbing my keys and pulling the door closed shouting "I'm coming with you!" whilst wondering where we might buy some blue paint so late in the day..
