The Chinese news is talking about cases of Covid coming in from Burma, in the town of Reili. It's a little peninsula of Yunnan Province that juts out into Burma, with mostly Dai in the lowlands, Jingpo etc in the hills.
I walked through some of those hills many years ago, when I was interning at a virus research facility looking at the spread of AIDS, which also entered China in Ruili, which was the national hotspot at the time. Covid has jumped in Burma in the past couple weeks, though still relatively little.
Wikipedia is showing an official increase in Covid-19 cases in China of only between 10-25 a day for the past few weeks. And it says Yunnan Province has a total of just 11 "imported" cases total since January, all recovered.
But Chinese news reports show images of the district of Ruili in Yunnan being fenced off and tightly patrolled for Covid cases. And apparently the whole district is going to get tested. Officially, Covid cases in Myanmar, across the border, have increased from just 1200 to 4600 in the past two weeks. But those are almost entirely in Rangoon, not near the border.
I'll keep an eye on this situation; maybe it will help me get a better fix on how China doctors Covid stats and information.
