More and more, I’ve been wondering about the long-term emotional and psychological effects of the current crisis. How many people will develop PTSD? We’ve all seen stories about the rise in domestic violence calls, the millions of poor children missing meals because their school-lunch programs are gone, how sales of alcohol have soared. It’s not as if a light switch will flip when societies re-open and people try to get back to “normal”. Millions of jobs are gone and not coming back. If analogies to the Great Depression are to be made, we’re still only in 1929.
I’m not sure if I completely buy into Fourth Turning theory, but if it’s valid, we’re entering an era of destruction, revolution, and war. Although the supposed “ancient Chinese curse” is apocryphal, we are living in “interesting times” that will likely wound the psyches of many, probably millions, people.
Coronavirus News and Analysis:
Admin Shelves CDC Guide to Reopening Country
A set of detailed documents created by the nation's top disease investigators meant to give step-by-step advice to local leaders deciding when and how to reopen public places such as mass transit, day care centers and restaurants during the still-raging pandemic has been shelved by the Trump administration.
It was supposed to be published last Friday, but agency scientists were told the guidance “would never see the light of day,” according to a CDC official.
One of Trump's personal valets has tested positive for coronavirus
A White House source said the valet, a man who has not been identified, exhibited "symptoms" Wednesday morning, and said the news that someone close to Trump had tested positive for coronavirus was "hitting the fan" in the West Wing.
The Jobs Report Friday Will Be a Portrait of Devastation
The last time the economy was in free fall, I wrote this: “The economy is unraveling so fast as to defy analysis through the usual statistical models. Among the phrases found in normally sober reports from the nation’s top economic forecasters yesterday: ‘god-awful,’ ‘wholesale capitulation,’ ‘shockingly weak’ and ‘indescribably terrible.’”
That jobs report, from November 2008, indicated that employers had cut 533,000 jobs. Analysts expect the April 2020 job losses to be 41 times worse.
