You can read the story here, but before you get all excited that the media is finally reporting on revolving door abuse between the sugar industry and the federal government, realize that the payoffs in question happened in the 1960s. The media is still lagging somewhat behind.
Because the sugar lobby is alive and well and influencing legislation and regulation even now, in the 21st Century, we put together a new geke venn to show some of the overlap between Big Sugar and Big Government.
According to OpenSecrets.org, "Sugar is the only industry in the entire agribusiness sector that has consistently supported Democrats during the past two decades... Individuals and political action committees associated with the sugar industry have contributed more than $41.7 million since 1990, with about 58 percent going to Democrats... [However] by the 2012 cycle, the industry accounted for more than $5.3 million in contributions, with the money evenly split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans."
