Today was kind of a little creepy. Seeing once bustling streets reduced to only a few cars and trucks a day was quite a site.
Apparently the army was just out of town boundaries and were asking people for reasons why they were coming into town. I never saw them so I don't know where they were.
Yesterday I saw an increase in the amount of people and families out for walks. Today was just crazy. It's like we traded the congestion problem from the road and put it onto the footpaths. Technically it meant that they were sort of breaking the law but if they remain at 2 metres or more from each other it's legal.
I only saw one police officer who I gave a wave and he waved back. I feel for the police. Their jobs are going to be crazy over the next few weeks. Given what's happened in China we can expect to see the domestic violence rates increase which is going to be a shame given that New Zealand has a big problem with this. That being said though I don't see that happening just yet.
People are generally keeping up their spirits but we're day one of at least twenty eight so it's anyone's guess how it's going to pan out.
I'm keen to see if a German study a few years ago holds true. If it does we should see more unsettled weather as a result of a lack of cars on the road. The belief is that the exhaust heat combined is enough to hold off inclement weather but when the number of cars drop then the weather changes for the worse. It's going to be hard to prove this because we're in Autumn so the rubbish weather is going to hit us as well.
One thing that was pretty cool was catching up with an old workmate that I haven’t seen in about six years. That was pretty cool and something I might never have been able to do had we not had lockdown.
All in all the day went pretty smoothly. Tomorrow is looking like a quiet day on the mail front so looking forward to starting the weekend early. We were also told that we need to drop to a 4 day week for the foreseeable future so I’m going to take Fridays off. Might as well get a decent weekend if I’m being forced to work.
