India is struggling with dowry related issues for decades and there seem to be no improvement in the condition. Men, here in India, think of themselves as previous commodities. The dowry is always proportionate to the groom's educational background and professional background. it is actually like a girl's parents have to buy a groom for their daughter by paying his parents the sum of money that they have invested in making him what he is today.
What is sad that the girl doesn't get to live with her parents even after her parents literally bought the groom, it works the opposite way and the bride is taken to the groom's house to work like a maid.
Few years back, a woman was tied with her hands back and was gagged and later lit on fire alive by her cruel husband and the reason for his criminal act he says was her father's inability to pay the promised dowry. The woman in her dying statement declared that her husband was the culprit and the motive was dowry. A strong chargesheet with various charges and it was recently that the course gave him a life term. I believe court should have rather give him something similar to what he did to his wife.
