The Bank of England established a research unit that tests blockchain technology and the usefulness of cryptocurrencies. The group of researchers has 12 months to conduct research and present conclusions. After approval, the central bank's cryptocurrency would allow British users to keep their digital money in the central bank itself, eliminating the need for retail banks. The system would also enable transactions with high values to be carried out almost immediately.
