On July 19th members of the White Hat Group took/rescued $85 million worth of Ether from vulnerable Ether wallets after being alerted to a $32 million theft of Ether from a group of malicious hackers.
They believed in order to stop further thefts from taking place it was their duty to perform the hacks themselves, in return securing the users Ether which they would return at a later date, when the security vulnerabilities were patched.
On July 24th The White Hat Group began to make good on their promise and return the Ether to it's rightful owners. They have sent back roughly $60 million so far.
A lot of people could of had their Ether stolen, never to be seen again but because of the actions of this group of crypto enthusiasts and hackers, that has been prevented and they are making good on their promise to return it all.
What is your take on this?
Was this the right thing to do or would you argue it wasn't their responsibility?
Personally if I had my Ether returned and the threat was genuine, which I believe it was as $60 million had already been taken and the security flaw was real, then I would be grateful for the work done by this group.
Were you one of the people who had their Ether taken/rescued?
