🗞 Hong Kong Stock Exchange CEO Casts Doubt on Crypto Miner IPO Filings
New comments from the chief executive of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) may have dampened the hopes of several cryptocurrency mining giants that have filed for initial public offerings (IPOs).
According to a report from Tencent’s news portal Finance.QQ on Thursday, HKEX CEO Charles Li Xiaojia said that companies seeking to list on the stock exchange must have a “sustainable” business model.
While Li did not talk about specific company applications, he answered in general about HKEX listing requirements in a response to a question on the crypto miner IPO filings from the news source. Three top crypto mining companies, Bitmain, Canaan and Ebang, have all filed to list on the HKEX, but none has received approval to date.
🗞 Davos 2019: Leaders Share Mixed Cryptocurrency Predictions
The annual meeting in the Swiss mountain resort of Davos from Jan. 22 to 25, attended by business leaders, politicians, and economists is in progress. Cryptocurrency is once again on the agenda, but so far the discussions emerging from the conference have been mixed, giving attendees plenty of FUD for thought.
"While last year, people were talking about crypto and blockchain anywhere and everywhere, this year there is comparatively little discussion around it."
🗞 Mastercard Fined $650M by EU for ‘Artificially’ Raising Fees
The European Union’s competition commission has handed Mastercard a €570 million ($648 million) fine for artificially raising payment processing fees in breach of antitrust laws, according to an online statement published on Jan. 22. Mastercard forced merchants to pay exchange fees in their countries of residence, forestalling their access to banks with lower fees elsewhere in the EU.
"This decision relates to historic practices only, covers a limited period of time of less than two years and will not require any modification of Mastercard’s current business practices."
🗞 US: New Hampshire Bill Aims to Legalize Bitcoin for State Payments in 2020
Lawmakers in the U.S. state of New Hampshire are currently considering a bill to legalize payment of fees and taxes in Bitcoin (BTC), documents originally published on Jan. 3 reveal.
NH HB470 is currently making its way through chambers of the local government, with a public hearing to introduce having took place yesterday, Jan. 23.
A subcommittee is due to examine it on Jan. 29, with a due date for a decision set for Mar. 14, a summary of the bill’s passage confirms.
🗞 Cboe Exchange Withdraws Proposal for VanEck-SolidX Bitcoin ETF
The Cboe BZX Exchange has withdrawn a proposed rule change that, if approved, would clear the way for a bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) backed by VanEck and SolidX.
In a notice published Wednesday, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) deputy secretary Eduardo Aleman wrote that the Cboe BZX Exchange had pulled its proposed rule change, which would have allowed it to list shares of the VanEck SolidX Bitcoin Trust if approved. The exchange filed its withdrawal on Jan. 22.
