Between North Korea and G7, let's take a moment to remember some history on Cuba-U.S. relations.
Cuba was a major US ally in the 1920s: we were their biggest market for their sugar exports. Then came Smoot-Hawley. From 1929 to 1933, the sugar tariff alone cut Cuba's GDP by 10%. From Peddling Prosperity (p 162-163):
"...the tariff clearly contributed to Cuba's severe economic problems and also to the overthrow of the pro-American government in the revolution of 1933. The revolution fundamentally changed Cuban politics and the country's economic policies, and represented a repudiation of the United States."
Protectionism indirectly led to the Cuban Missile Crisis, the closest the world has gotten to a full-scale nuclear war.
If goods don't cross borders, nukes might.
