Van Heutsz monument, Menteng, Batavia, 1933.
This monument was built by Dutch government to honour Joannes Benedictus van Heutsz, a Dutch military officer who was appointed as Governor General of Dutch East Indies in 1904 after his successful campaign in Aceh war. Van Heutsz conquer Aceh by killing 2900 people, while he only lost 26 troops. Yet this act was considered as a war crime.
The statue was built in 1932, and was destroyed by Indonesian at 1953 for bringing a bad memories about Aceh massacre.
Now in the location was built a mosque, and the road that was named after him was changed from Van Heutsz road into Teuku Umar road, an Acehnese hero in Aceh war.
