I spent most of the day painting my kitchen cupboard doors and while I'm quite pleased with the result, I'm not impressed with the amount of money it's cost or time it's taken!
I am very pleased with the colour, note that this is only after nine coats, so they still need another coat of colour and then a final varnish to give them some protection:
The Hassle of Painting Cupboard Doors!
I generally quite enjoy DIY, but I haven't enjoyed my cupboard experience - had I known how much of a pain it would be I'd have not bothered!
The first phase was fine - I managed to get my perfect colour thanks to B and Qs 'colour match' service - I just took a picture of one of my tiles, uploaded it, and the colour came out bang on what I wanted.
I had thought getting the colour right was going to be the difficult part, but it turns out that was easy, painting them was the damn hassle...
First off I took all the doors off, that was easy enough, but then I made the mistake of 'cheating' and used some regular white paint I had as primer, then the matt paint I'd got from B and Q - and they just looked shit. It took me four coats to realise that.
And the doors off, and taking up most of the floor space in my kitchen and living room.
They stayed there for a week (that was last weekend) while I did some research, tracked down some proper primer, some satin paint and then some varnish.
Total cost = £55 (WTF!)
I put the primer on with the doors off, second time round, three coats.
Then I put the doors back on, which was more hassle that I thought, thanks to the heads continually falling out of my Wilko screwdriver.
I still need to secure one rogue door properly, for some reason it just didn't want to go back on.
Disruptive painting
I was looking forwards to having a booze free few weeks, but after the above I was pretty traumatised - the whole cupboard door chabang had now taken about three times as long as planned
It was after putting the doors on I resolved to get a few beers in this evening, something to get me through!
Then two coats of my new paint, but which time it was 16.00, and I've got more left to do tomorrow, thank gods for the cling film trick with the paint tray!
