My dad, working in our garden, has found several old coins under the ground. Coins are from the different periods and different countries. I tried to find out the cause why are these different coins are in our district.
Here are some photos of these coins:
- Deutsches Reich (1874). I think that this coin has appeared to our garden because my city was near the border of the former German Empire. Trade exchanges have been made, it is natural that the locals also had a national currency of neighbor country.
- Russian Empire (1915). Our country was occupied until 1918 by Russian Empire, and therefore the currency of this country was used in everyday life.
- Republic of Lithuania (1936). In 1918 our country declared independence and until the next occupation we used our national currency.
- Nazi Germany (1941). Our country was occupied from 1941 to 1944 by Nazi Germany, so Nazi Germanies currency was used.
- USSR (1929, 1946). As usual – when one aggressor goes, another comes. So after Nazi Germanies occupation our country was again occupied by Soviet Union and until our restoration of independence (1991) we had to use that countries currency.
Thats how it is – when one country occupies other with force, they are forced to use that countries currency. So old coins from the ground can tell a lot about that country, its real history, economical and political relationships with other countries. I‘m proud that today our country is independent and we can use currency that is set in our main legal act – constitution.
