Crocodile providing Support at South African MTB Race

Riding around on your Mountain Bike in South Africa is a unique experience. Just biking on our MTB trail inside our housing estate, you can encounter jackals, guinea fowls, and huge monitor lizards. There are many MTB parks in and around Johannesburg, and I have often seen kudu's, giraffes, and many other type of antelopes in the wild.

During two MTB stage races, the joberg2C and the Sani2C you can see something else: a crocodile called Henry! According to the race organisers: "Henry the crocodile is growing in confidence every year. Its so nice to see his real character coming through... He loves taking long slow swims, eating sushi and basking in the warm KwaZulu Natal sun... ".

The croc is from CrocWorld Conservation Centre, http://crocworld.co.za and Henry, at 114-years-old and over 750kgs, is the oldest and heaviest captive crocodile in the world.

The joBerg2c is the longest mountain biking stage race in South Africa. It takes place annually in April over nine days and covering approximately 900 kilometres, from Johannesburg to the Sea, close to Durban, with 12,000 m climbing. The event is fully serviced – each rider (team of two or solo) is allocated a tent and three meals per day at the eight overnight stops or race villages. Additional services such as massage therapists and bike mechanics are also available. The Old Mutual joBerg2c is a GPS navigated event and riders traverse a variety of agricultural holdings including game, dairy and cattle country, maize lands, rose and stud farms, sugarcane fields and pine plantations.
