Hello Friends!
It has been a little bit since I last posted a video in my Dtube Dance series! Part of the reason is that I don’t have a dance partner right now, and so I haven’t really had anyone to film with. I’m working on that though and I’ll hopefully have some awesome dance videos coming up for you guys soon!
I thought it would be fun to do something a little different today though. I usually post a video of me dancing to a song, but I thought I’d actually give YOU guys some dance tips!
At some point, everyone finds themselves at parties, weddings, concerts or other places where people are dancing. Wouldn’t it be more fun to feel a little more confident going out on the dance floor?
Here is my simplest, easiest tip to automatically improve your swagger.
Accentuate the upbeats
What do I mean by that? Honestly, it will make way more sense if you watch the video, but I am basically referring to the even counted beats. Most music is broken into 8 count measures and so instead of moving at random – you can focus your movement to hit the upbeat (or even counted beats) to instantly look like you have more style!
In songs that have a bit more of a high energy, pop feel – you will likely want to accentuate with a sudden stop, or hit. You can use various body parts to do this!
You can actually use this tip in slower, juicier songs too. Just because the count is an even 8 beats – that doesn’t mean you can’t manipulate them a bit. You can actually streeeetch out the upbeat and shorten the downbeat to have a smoother flow to your dancing. Again… this is where watching me demonstrate in the video will make more sense!
My Dance Background
I started dancing ballet when I was about 4 years old and it was definitely my passion growing up! I didn’t do much dancing in high school, except for musical theatre – but I picked it back up again around 9 years ago. I started doing ballroom and latin dancing and then eventually found West Coast Swing. It is a partner dance that really allows space for creativity and partner connection. You never know what is going to happen when you walk on the dance floor and I love getting to create in the moment with another person.
Dancing is mostly just a fun hobby for me. I do occasionally teach, compete and perform … but I mainly just like to go out and have fun, while getting to be creative at the same time.
Well, I had a SUPER fun time filming this video and I have lots more tips I could share if you guys are interested in learning! Let me know what you think and I hope you guys have a fantastic day!
Xo, Lea
