Yes, I have used tinder. I would like to share some insights which I have acquired by using this app. All this will only work if you have a nice profile. By nice profile, What I mean is this:
- Have a nice bio
- Have sensible profile pictures
- Be respectful to others
- Be non-creepy
Tinder (for those who don't know :P)
Tinder is a dating app where users swipe left (unlike) or swipe right (like) profiles. If both users like each other, it is a match and the chat window will be unlocked so that they can talk to each other. But there are a lot of hidden things which users don't really understand the app. One of the hidden stuff is the tinder's internal ELO rating. Let us see what is ELO rating.
ELO Rating
Our goal here is not to mathematically analyze ELO rating. But few points to note are quoted below from wiki page.
The Elo system was originally invented as an improved chess rating system over the previously used Harkness system,...
The difference in the ratings between two players serves as a predictor of the outcome of a match.
Tinder has adapted this concept to develop their own algorithm. But this algorithm is not available for the public. Each user is assigned an ELO rating. Tinder ELO rating does two things:
- Rate each user according to their algorithm
- Determine your visibility in the tinder environment according to your score
New users are given some visibility boost for an initial temporary period.
My experience with Tinder
I have observed a kind of positive feedback when it comes to finding matches here on tinder. What I meant is that when I have gained matches, there is a high probability to gain more new matches. But once I unmatch all the users, then I observe a long period with no matches at all. This means my visibility is also affected once I unmatch all users. So remember that ELO rating is dynamic. It changes with your number of matches.
Some tips to improve your ELO rating
I can suggest you to try these things to gain visibility and potential matches:
- If you have cool friends, try mutual liking for the purpose of improving ELO score.
- If you match with someone but ends in friendzone, ask them to keep the match alive(explaining the reason and of course in a friendly way) even if they don't want to date you. Keep the ELO score strong that way. :P

This article should be considered as a social experiment rather than an absolute advice. Since we don't know how exactly the algorithm works, these are based on my experience of using this app.
