Following on from part one of the 'Delectable Desserts from India', today I introduce another decadent sweet dish called 'Ghari'
This is again a rare to find dessert even in India and has a bit of a history behind it...
This sweet dish dates back to mid 1800s, when it was first prepared by a man called 'Devshankar Shukla' for a freedom fighter by the name of 'Tatya Tope' to provide extra strength to the freedom soldiers in the year 1857.
Even more peculiarly, this sweet dish began to be consumed during inauspicious occasions too, particularly by people of some castes in the crematorium for peace to the soul of the dead...
Enough of the history lesson...one thing is for certain, that Ghari is as popular and as decadent as it has ever been. Made from Puri Batter, Milk 'mawa', Clarified Butter 'ghee' and Sugar as base ingredients, it is then infused with either pistachio or almonds and cardamon to give distinct flavours and colours
The outer layer of ghee coating adds to the richness and taste to the ghari, which just melts away in your mouth...
As decadent this sweet dish with its rich ingredients, I can only savor it in one or two bite size pieces at most (as can be seen from this photo), but there is no doubt, for the Steemians with sweet tooths, would have no doubt devouring a whole Pistachio and Almond & Cardamon flavored Gharis in one helping!
