With this post I want to touch on 2 topics on Hive: plagiarism and downvoting.

What is plagiarism? And is it really bad?
- Intellectual property (IP) is a complex subject I am no expert in. I've read and can recommend Kinsella's book "Against Intellectual Property" (free pdf here). Physical property is a concept that helps "solving"/mitigating the problem of scarcity of physical goods. Whereas "intellectual property" is not scarce. So there is no or less need for protecting it (at least by force of government). My readings on this topic make me rather "anti-IP".
- An interesting argument I've read is "Intellectual property and physical property cannot exist side-by-side as logically independent legal constructions. Anything that gives control over physical things necessarily limits others' control of those things, and therefore acts exactly like a physical property right. If you have an intellectual property right to your monograph, you may prevent me from copying it, thereby limiting the physical property right I have in my ink, pen, and paper." (source)
- In an ideal world every writer would quote his sources because that's fair towards the "holder" of the original idea because he gets part of the "glory". But is that a must? Isn't a blockchain (as an immutable digital ledger) a technology that solves the proof of invention. As every transaction or text can be dated, there is proof who was the originator of some idea, text or picture.
- My personal view on content written by me: I am glad if someone uses my ideas or texts. It's great if this person quotes me, but it's also great if he/she does not. My ideas are more important than my ego (that wants as much glory as possible) 😉.
What is downvoting for?
- Downvoting takes away upvotes of other fellow Hiveans. That's why I consider downvoting rude.
- I use it only in self-defense if people keep attacking me (e.g. with strawman arguments), after I've told them to stop.
- Is it ok to downvote for plagiarism? I tend to think it's not and, thus, I don't do it.

Mit diesem Beitrag möchte ich 2 Themen auf Hive ansprechen: Plagiate und Downvoting.
Auslöser für diesen Beitrag war der kürzliche Downvote-"Angriff" auf
Was ist ein Plagiat? Und ist es wirklich schlimm?
- Geistiges Eigentum (IP) ist ein komplexes Thema, in dem ich kein Experte bin. Ich habe Kinsellas Buch "Gegen geistiges Eigentum" gelesen und kann es empfehlen (kostenloses pdf hier). Physisches Eigentum ist ein Konzept, das dazu beiträgt, das Problem der Knappheit physischer Güter zu "lösen"/mildern. "Geistiges Eigentum" hingegen ist nicht knapp. Daher besteht kein oder nur ein geringer Bedarf, es zu schützen (zumindest durch staatliche Gewalt). Nach meiner Lektüre zu diesem Thema bin ich eher "anti-IP".
- Ein interessantes Argument, das ich gelesen habe, lautet: "Geistiges Eigentum und physisches Eigentum können nicht als logisch unabhängige Rechtskonstruktionen nebeneinander bestehen. Alles, was die Kontrolle über physische Dinge ermöglicht, schränkt zwangsläufig die Kontrolle anderer über diese Dinge ein und verhält sich daher genau wie ein physisches Eigentumsrecht. Wenn Sie ein geistiges Eigentumsrecht an Ihrer Monographie haben, können Sie mich daran hindern, sie zu kopieren, und damit das physische Eigentumsrecht, das ich an meiner Tinte, meinem Stift und meinem Papier habe, einschränken." - In einer idealen Welt würde jeder Autor seine Quellen zitieren, denn das ist fair gegenüber dem "Inhaber" der ursprünglichen Idee, weil er einen Teil des "Ruhmes" erhält. Aber ist das ein Muss? Ist eine Blockchain (als unveränderlicher digitaler Ledger) nicht eine Technologie, die den Erfindungsnachweis löst. Da jede Transaktion oder jeder Text datiert werden kann, gibt es einen Beweis dafür, wer der Urheber einer Idee, eines Textes oder eines Bildes ist.
- Meine persönliche Meinung zu von mir geschriebenen Inhalten: Ich freue mich, wenn jemand meine Ideen oder Texte verwendet. Es ist toll, wenn diese Person mich zitiert, aber es ist auch toll, wenn er/sie es nicht tut. Meine Ideen sind wichtiger als mein Ego (das so viel Ruhm wie möglich will) 😉.
Wozu dient Downvoting?
- Downvoting nimmt die Upvotes von anderen Hivern weg. Deshalb halte ich Downvoting für unhöflich.
- Ich benutze es nur zur Selbstverteidigung (ultima ratio), wenn mich jemand weiter angreift (z.B. mit Strohmann-Argumenten), nachdem ich ihn aufgefordert habe, damit aufzuhören.
- Ist es OK wegen Plagiats downzuvoten? Ich finde nicht, und deshalb mache ich es nicht.

¿Qué es el plagio? ¿Y es realmente malo?
- La propiedad intelectual (PI) es un tema complejo en el que no soy experto. He leído y puedo recomendar el libro de Kinsella "Contra la propiedad intelectual" (pdf gratuito aquí). La propiedad física es un concepto que ayuda a "resolver"/mitigar el problema de la escasez de bienes físicos. Mientras que la "propiedad intelectual" no es escasa. Por lo tanto, no hay necesidad de protegerla (al menos por la fuerza del gobierno). Mis lecturas sobre este tema me hacen ser más bien "anti-IP".
- Un argumento interesante que he leído es: "La propiedad intelectual y la propiedad física no pueden coexistir como construcciones jurídicas lógicamente independientes. Cualquier cosa que otorgue control sobre cosas físicas necesariamente limita el control de otros sobre esas cosas, y por lo tanto actúa exactamente como un derecho de propiedad física. Si usted tiene un derecho de propiedad intelectual sobre su monografía, puede impedirme que la copie, limitando así el derecho de propiedad física que tengo sobre mi tinta, mi pluma y mi papel". - En un mundo ideal, todos los escritores citarían sus fuentes porque eso es justo para el "titular" de la idea original, ya que se lleva parte de la "gloria". Pero, ¿es eso una obligación? ¿No es la cadena de bloques (como libro de contabilidad digital inmutable) una tecnología que resuelve la prueba de invención? Como cada transacción o texto puede ser fechado, existe la prueba de quién fue el originador de alguna idea, texto o imagen.
- Mi opinión personal sobre el contenido escrito por mí: Me alegro si alguien utiliza mis ideas o textos. Es estupendo si esa persona me cita, pero también lo es si no lo hace. Mis ideas son más importantes que mi ego (que quiere toda la gloria posible) 😉.
¿Para qué sirve el downvoting?
- El downvoting quita los upvotes de otros compañeros de Hiveans. Por eso considero que el downvoting es una grosería.
- Sólo lo uso en defensa propia si la gente sigue atacándome (por ejemplo, con argumentos de paja), después de haberles dicho que paren.
- ¿Se puede votar a la baja por plagio? Tiendo a pensar que no lo es y, por tanto, no lo hago.
