A couple of days ago, while at the Hubbel Trading post, I saw a sign advertising a free dance event. Navajo Dancers.
Of course, I wanted to go. What an opportunity!
We went to Chinle to see the performance. But it was so much more than that!
The leader of the dance group is, in his own words, and educator and an activist. He told us a lot about the history of the Dineh people (Navajo is the name given by the Spanish). He told us about the baskets and their meaning and so much more. I recoded the educational part of his presentation and hope that I got most of it so I can tell you all about it.
He also told us not to take pictures - or if we do, do not share them online.
I didn’t take any pictures or recorded the singing since I respect that this is not mine to take or to share.
But I did take a couple of pictures of the baskets.
The one on the table is holding cedar which is used to purify the brain. The basked on the floor is holding white corn. This, you sprinkle a little in the morning to the east to show that you are thankful for the day and are giving a blessing or a sign of gratitude.
I feel very honored to have had the opportunity to be part of this event.
