4.1 Meeting with the Junior Supervisor
Peter escorted James to the Junior Supervisor's office. The door of his office had iris and print recognition for added security.
"It's me, Peter, sir. I've brought you James," Peter addressed the Junior Supervisor through the communication console on the door.
"Good, leave us now," the Supervisor instructed him from the other side.
As Peter left, the door opened and James walked in.
"Sit down, James."
The Supervisor spent the next minute taking notes which made James fidgety.
"Has Peter explained to you the situation you find yourself in?"
"Somewhat, yes."
"Well let me reiterate. From this moment on you'll be working for us, indefinitely."
"Who exactly are you people?"
"We're the Accipiter Group, a subdivision group of the shadow government and this is Project Starjump," the Supervisor said.
"You lied to me. You deceived me, I didn't agree to this," James raised his voice.
"You've brought this on yourself when you took the sleeping pill we gave you in Pheonix. Only someone with nothing to lose would risk trusting a total stranger like that. But you were on a verge of suicide and didn't care. You're not suicidal right now, are you? In fact you're thinking about escaping, I can see it in your eyes."
" You would be foolish to try," the Supervisor said to him as he pressed a button on the desk and a holographic projection of a spine appeared in front of him."We've implanted a small device next to your C2 vertebrae while you were unconscious during your transport over here. The device acts as both a tracking device and a kill switch. Should you attempt to escape or disobey our orders at anytime we will turn it on and you will die."
James instinctively touched the back of his neck and indeed he felt an unfamiliar scar. It was strange he hadn't noticed it before. It was proof of just how dangerous these people were.
"Your first assignment is to report to the Gravity room," the Supervisor said.
"What will be my task?" James asked.
"Dr. Mosley will explain everything. That is all."
4.2 Gravity room
Dr. Mosley was waiting for James as he exited the door. He escorted James to the elevator which took them to Level 2, where the Gravity room was located.
They first stopped by his clinic where he took some preliminary measurements of James's blood pressure, heart rate, bone density etc. After that, they proceeded towards the Gravity room.
"Step inside. I'll be giving you instructions through the speaker," dr. Mosley said as they reached the entrance to the Gravity room.
James stepped through the door. He looked around the room. It was a vast place. The ceiling was fifty feet high or so and the room stretched for approximately two miles in length as far as he could see.
"We're going to test how your body deals with changing gravitational forces. I'll start by reducing the gravity to 0.5G, which is half of Earth's gravity (1G = 9.8 m/s 2). Try to move around and adjust to the new conditions," Dr. Mosley said through the speaker.
As soon as the gravity had decreased James felt much lighter. James's body mass equaled 200 lb but because weight is directly dependent upon gravitational acceleration (Weight = mass × G-force) he weighed 100 lb (= 200 lb × 0.5G) in this artificially induced environment instead of his normal 200 lb in normal earth gravity (1G).
It was a weird feeling but very liberating. He started to experiment with walking, running and jumping. With every attempt he was getting better and better and his jumps were higher and longer. He was able to perform feats that he could only dream of doing in normal gravity and it made him feel like a superhero.
"I'm lowering the gravity to 0.1G now," he heard Dr. Mosley say.
He now weighed only twenty lb and was able to move even easier. It became clear to him why the Gravity room was so vast. You could traverse great distances in low gravity. He kept moving further along and eventually came across a large pit forty feet in diameter.
"Jump over to the other side."
"Are you kidding me?"
"No, jump over!"
James looked at the bottom of the pit. It was thirty feet deep which means it would probably be fatal for him should he fall before he made it to the other side. He remembered what the Supervisor had said would happen to him if he didn't follow orders. He had no choice so he jumped.
About 3/4 across the pit he looked over to other side where he was suppose to land and realised his jump would probably be too short. His heart began to race.
Dr. Mosley initiated zero-g conditions (OG) at that very moment. The weightlessness in combination with the momentum he had carried him safely to the other side of the pit. James heaved a huge sigh of relief. He spent the next ten minutes experiencing the liberating state of weightlessness.
After that dr. Mosley returned the gravity back to normal again. He gave James fifteen minutes to rest.
"Alright Mr. Parker this is the second part of the test. You're now going to experience heavier G-forces than those present on Earth. I'm increasing the gravity to 1.5G."
James could feel the increased gravity put extra pressure on his body. But it wasn't like wearing a heavy backpack or lifting weights. The added weight was pressing down on his entire body and was thus a lot more taxing on it.
"Walk to the end of the room and back," dr. Mosley instructed James.
James started walking. He was struggling to move his legs weighing 300 lb in this high gravity. It felt like he weighed a ton though which was a drastic change considering he experienced weightlessness just minutes before. James had realized the fun part was over.
He had to stop a few times to rest. As he reached the end of the room dr. Mosley increased the gravity to 2G's which made his walk back to the starting point even harder. He was sweating profusely.
It took him three hours to complete the full distance and he was soaking wet from the gruesome workout.
After an hour long break dr. Mosley adressed James again: "Listen carefully. This is the final part of the test and also the hardest. I'm going to start increasing the gravity from 1-30G's in ten second intervals. We're going to test the limits of your body's endurance. Prepare yourself. Ready?"
"I'm ready," James said nodding halfheartedly. He was already exhausted and what he had heard dr. Mosley say wasn't encouraging at all.
As the gravity increased to 5G's James's knees started to buckle and he fell to the floor. He couldn't handle the increased weight of his body. At 10 G's the massive force of gravity pinned him to the floor. At 20 G's he felt it crushing his body. It was extremely painful. At 30 G's he lost consciousness.
Dr. Mosley immediately reversed the gravity back to normal and transported him to the clinic. Fortunately he had no serious injuries and he soon regained consciousness. The doctor let him rest for a while and then conducted final measurements of his vital signs. He stayed the night recuperating and being observed. He had completed his first task for Project Starjump.
