Is your dryer running? Mine is and it ran off and left the insides laying in the laundry room.
What is going on around this place?!?!?
Sometimes I get in too much of a hurry when things need to get repaired. Like the dryer for instance, I tore it all apart in about 10 minutes then made a Public Service Announcement video about clothes dryer fires. Then after work today the parts came in and I slapped it all back together and didn’t even do a DIY!!! Wait....what?!??
This really was one of those fixes that could save you a bunch of money on a repair call. I feel like I have let my DIY peeps down on this one big time!!!
What Went Wrong With the Dryer
What happened was out of nowhere the clothes dryer started screeching really bad. I mean so stinking loud I could hear it outside....wait I wasn’t outside but... it was just really loud, OK. My first thought was... really!!! Something else broke around here!! Can I just catch a little....break (yep I did it on that one didn’t I) Oh well, it is just what you deal with sometimes when your a homeowner.
There are a few things is could be, a belt, bearing, or... something else. I won’t know until I dig inside and start turning things that turn. LOL. I honestly have never opened up a clothes dryer before. It should be easy, it’s basically just a box with some stuff inside. Piece of ca...... okay this was kind of weird figuring out how this thing came apart. With the help of my sidekick we figured out how to dissect this clothes dryer. It was a little trickier than I thought. Ya, we took a few screws out we didn’t need to but hey, you will have that when you do something for the first time. It did get a little frustrating but we managed to crack the egg open and see what was going on.
After pulling the Drum out and the belt off, we went through each of the wheels inside the dryer. There are 2 on the back and 2 on the front that look like wheels from some rollerblades.
These are what the drum rolls on, there are groves on the front and back of the drum where the wheels travel. Then what actually turns the drum is the belt that is connected to a motor and held tightly with a tensioner pulley. (AKA a wheel on a metal arm that uses spring pressure to keep the belt tight around the drum)
Guess what, that is the bearing that went bad. The bearing on that one wheel!! When turning the tensioner wheel/pulley it made that nice screeching sound I was searching for. Problem found and now it’s time to find the part. Let’s hit the internet and see what we can find shall we ??
After a quick search online of the brand and model number I found this...

With my home warranty I have, just the service call would cost double that amount. I have no idea what a normal service call would cost to have someone come and look into this awful screeching noise without a home warranty???
After just a couple short days the parts showed up and I slapped this dryer back together. I had slept since I took it apart so it did take a couple moments to dig through the storage cabinet in my brain to find the mental photos I was looking for. But I knew they were in there somewhere.
It actually went together just about as easy as it came apart, once I found the right brain file to look in. 20 minutes later and our clothes dryer is back in action. Drying clothes and shooting that exhaust under the trailer to keep it warm under there during these cold winter months.
Sometimes I just get in the zone and start zooming around fixing stuff and forget about all my DIY peeps. This was a perfect little project, but hey sometimes you win some....sometimes...uh...you don’t post a DIY to Steemit.
