I took this photo in front of my office in the Family Court, as a beginner I am fond of the world of photography. But by just displaying a picture of course it will feel empty, so I try to complete my photographic description by explaining the animals in the picture.
This animal in Indonesia is named Tonggeret. In Latin, this animal is named Tibicen Linnei. According to many researchers, this animal is classified as very unique because live in larvae in the soil for 8-17 years, after leaving the soil then live in the wild with a very short time of about 3 weeks. This animal out from the ground only for mating. After mating, these animals will plant their eggs into the soil again and then die.
In local culture in Indonesia, the sound of perch is a sign of the arrival of the dry season or the end of the rainy season. If farmers plant rice during the rainy season, the sound of Tonggeret becomes a natural code to farmers to prepare plant a crops, such as corn and peanuts.
Did you know that this animal has a very loud sound and the function of this sound is a call to mating. In addition, it turned out that the loud sound also became a weapon to scare birds so they did not dare to approach and eat them, Purnama Hidayat PhD said, The insect expert at the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (graduatue from University of Wisconsin, United States).
Nowadays the sound of Tonggeret is less often heard because many trees are cut down and the conditions of dry land cause the population of Toggeret more a little because they cannot survive. Climate change also causes Tonggeret no longer be trusted by farmers as a sign of the beginning of the dry season. Usually when the dry and rainy season changes relatively regularly, the sound of Tonggeret can be enjoyed regularly too. But at this time climate change is happening, even the sound of Tonggeret is no longer routine once a year.
As nature lovers, it is time for us to make eco-living as a lifestyle, let reforest the environment that is already barren, and then our grandchildren will enjoy the song of Tonggeret.
