If you want a book that cover a wide range from simple wisdom for a good everyday living to profound and deep spiritual truths while also being somewhat easy to get into for newcomers, you can't go wrong with Dhammapada. It is a part of of the Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism and also known as the "Handbook of The Buddhists" You can read this post where I quote several verses from the book.
The cover itself is simple, informative with minimalist design and the book is really old. I have no idea how old the book is because it was not something I bought. You can complete reading the book in tiny portions and still have a profound experience. Please consider giving it a try :-)
