Die aus der jüdisch-christlichen Tradition stammende Aufspaltung in Gott und Teufel (bzw. Himmel und Hölle) und die damit einhergehende Wertung (gut und böse) ist dem Yoga eher fremd.
Die im Indischen existierende Polarität wird Shiva und Shakti genannt.
Hierbei handelt es sich ebenfalls um Personifizierungen.
Shiva (männlich) und Shakti (weiblich) sind jedoch ein Paar.
Es wird also mehr der verbindende und ergänzende Aspekt betont als der trennende und gegensätzliche.
Schon allein die Verwendung dieser für uns weniger besetzten Begriffe kann einen neuen Blick und eine andere Haltung ermöglichen.
Shiva (wörtl.: der "Gütige", verehrt als eine oberste Gottheit der Hindu-Trinität) steht hierbei für die kosmische Energie, für Bewusstsein, für das Erschaffende, für das Ewige, das transzendente Absolute etc. Seine "Gemahlin" Shakti (wörtl.: die "Kraft", verehrt als die "göttliche Mutter") symbolisiert die Energie und die Erscheinungen der Erde, des Naturhaften und des Körperlichen, also die Urenergie und alles aus ihr Geschaffene.
Yoga (von yuj, was soviel wie "sich verbinden, sich verheiraten" heißt, lateinisch: iungere ), ist nun eine Praxis, mit welcher der Mensch lernt, jene beiden Pole in sich zu verbinden (siehe die heilige Hochzeit, die "unio mystica") und die Dualität zu überwinden.
Das Wort Yoga leitet sich von dem altindischen Yuga ab, was ursprünglich Joch bedeutet und hier die Unterjochung des Geistes im Körper meint.
Yoga steht für eine Selbst-Disziplin, die den Geist aus diesem Joch befreit.
Dies gelingt mit Hilfe des Erweckens der Kundalini (ein Grundanliegen jeder Yogadisziplin).

Only the use of these terms for us less occupied could allow a new look and a different attitude. Shiva (lit.: the "benevolent", revered as a supreme deity of the Hindu Trinity) stands for the cosmic energy, for consciousness, for the creating, for the eternal, transcendent absolute etc. His "wife" Shakti (lit.: the 'force', revered as the "divine mother") symbolizes the energy and the phenomena of the Earth, the natural and the physical, so the humanized and everything from you created. Yoga (from has, which means "to connect, to marry" is Latin,: iungere), a practice by which a person learns to combine those two poles in itself (see the Holy wedding "unio mysticism") and to overcome the duality is now.
The word Yoga is derived from the ancient Indian Yuga, which originally means yoke, and here means the subjugation of the mind in the body.
Yoga is a self discipline that frees the mind from this yoke. This is achieved with the help of the arousal of the Kundalini (a basic concern of every yoga discipline).
