Introduction

Welcome to my weekly mushroom protocol. In my previous and also my first post titled: Mushroom Protocol 01 We went over 3 mushrooms.
Namely:

• The Scleroderma citrinum or earthball
• The Craterellus cornucopioides or horn of plenty
• The lycoperdon or puffball

The following were reviewed and discussed in a regular mycological study group I go to weekly.

Boletus calopus, bitter beech bolete or scarlet-stemmed bolete

Class	Agaricomycetes
Scientific Name	Caloboletus calopus
Common Name	Bitter Beech Bolete
Appearance	Cap 5 to 14cm across, often irregularly lobed; various shades of smoky-grey, yellow tubes, 7 to 9cm tall and 3 to 5cm in diameter stem, lemon yellow at the apex and flushed red. yellowish net pattern. turns turquoise-blue when cut. similar appearance to Suillellus luridus
Habitat	often found under oak trees as well as under Beech on chalky soil
Type	Mycorrhizal
Odeur	Bitter taste; strong and unpleasant fungal smell
Culinary	inedible

Hygrocybe punicea, Crimson or waxycap

Class	Agaricomycetes
Scientific Name	Hygrocybe punicea
Common Name	Crimson Waxcap
Appearence	dark blood red cap with irregular downturned margin. Becomes yellowish when mature. Gills are initially yellow and gradually become red when the fruit body ages. The stem is 5 to 15cm long and 1.3 to 2cm in diameter, is coarsely fibrillose, red on to and shading into yellow.
Habitat	Found in mown grassland
Type	Mycorrhizal
Odeur	undefined
Culinary	edible
Taste	Mild tasting,
Medicinal properties	Anti-tumor effects Polysaccharides extracted from the mycelial culture of H. punicea and administered intraperitoneally into white mice at a dosage of 300 mg/kg inhibited the growth of Sarcoma 180 and Ehrlich solid cancers by 90% and 100%, respectively (Ohtsuka et al., 1973). Hypholoma fasciculare, sulphur tuft :

Common Name	Sulphur Tuft
Appearence	The cap is Sulphur yellow,
Habitat	Found on mixed woodland. grown typically on grows
Odeur	gas like
Culinary	inedible
Taste	not defiined

Conclusions

There are a lot of mushrooms out there and it's good to know both the poisonous ones and the non-poinonous. The smell can tell a lot about a mushroom. Looking forward to comments and to my next post
