Maybe it's just my circle of friends and co-workers, but we tend to talk about things in terms of their relation to the timing of the pandemic. Sad, but it seems to come up like that.
My point: we decided to get another pug 'pre-pandemic' but she wasn't going to be ready to leave her mom until what ended up being the start of lockdowns and travel limits and mask mandates!
We actually thought we may not be able to go over state lines (we are in Massachusetts and she was in New Hampshire)! It was an odd time. Well, aren't they all these days, I guess!?
But we made the plans to pick her up on Easter. I was nervous about being in a strangers house, this being the very beginning of the uncertainty of the whole thing, but I wanted that puppy in my arms (or hand, really, as she was about 2 pounds!) and nothing was gonna keep me from her!
We had had Orbit, our Boston Terrier rescue, for about a year. He had made HUGE strides in his training. The biting was under control...he was learning that toys, not hands, were acceptable chew things. He, thank goodness, had picked up the potty training within his first week with us. And, most importantly, we were figuring out his cues and what he needed, when. Basically, when he was being naughty it simply meant he needed a nap! He is a perpetual toddler. And having never had the baby bug, it was frustrating to be dealing with all that!
Despite his progress though, I was very anxious about bringing a tiny puppy home to a dog who enjoys chewing and thrashing his toys around.
But after several months of keeping a close eye when they played and keeping them separate when we couldn't, he began to tolerate her more and more.
Orbit still needs to be away from her when he's tired, but they do love to play.
It is so much fun having two dogs, even if one of them is a neurotic mess and the other has no respect for personal space.
Freyja is our second pug (Moxie was nearly 15 when she passed a few years ago). Having worked in an animal hospital and shelter, I am going to go ahead and call it: Pugs are my favorite! Orbit is a great dog, but the energy level of terriers is not for the faint of heart! If you are a terrier parent, I commend you on your patience!
