One of my neighborhood friends has had two expectant dachshunds, and they gave birth just five days apart. Four puppies are in each litter. Today I stopped by to visit them, and fell in love with them all!
These are Lucy's babies, her second litter. She loves taking care of her puppies so much that when she doesn't have any puppies, she adopts a couple of stuffed dog toys and takes care of them instead!
This is Lucy's largest pup. He was born last, and he was so big, my friend had to take Lucy and the pups in their box to the vet to get help with the birth. She says this coloration is called "dappled." The father is dappled, while Lucy is black with tan markings.
The father, Jake, is a mini-dachshund, while both the mothers are standard dachshunds. Molly is caramel-colored, but none of her puppies look like her. Apparently, Jake has very strong genes! He is a very affectionate dog, so I hope he passes that trait on to his puppies as well. Guess what? I want a puppy!
