Dopamine trigger. Novelty. Reward System and Attention.
What is dopamine?
Dopamine is one of the chemical signals that pass information from one neuron to the next in the tiny spaces between them.
When it is released from the first neuron, it floats into the space (the synapse) between the two neurons, and it bumps against receptors for it on the other side that then send a signal down the receiving neuron
Novel information has the potential to trigger one of two responses— retreat or exploration. Curiosity is a feeling of novel information taking on the second, exploratory path, which is the first step toward a satisfying mental experience.
Research done at the University College London, written by Wall Street Journal reporter Jason Zweig, suggests that getting what you expected to get produces no dopamine kick, but a novelty in the form of an unexpected gain gives the brain a blast of dopamine.
When something unexpected or unusual caught your attention, dopamine is released in the brain. Unexpected (and pleasant) surprises release more dopamine than expected ones.
But dopamine has a dark side, too; if the target is expecting a reward and don’t get it, dopamine levels fall off fast. And when dopamine levels drop fast, the feeling of stress is just around the corner.
In summary, expecting rewards generates dopamine. Dopamine is the buzz of novelty. Alone, however, it’s not enough to create attention.
What creates attention?
It comes down to the presence of two neurotransmitters: dopamine and norepinephrine. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter of desire.
Norepinephrine is the neurotransmitter of tension.
Together they add up to attention. If you want someone’s undivided, fully engaged attention, you have to provide these two neurotransmitters. These two chemicals work together—you need them both to be coursing through the crocodile brain of the target. But each has a different triggering mechanism. To give a dopamine kick and create desire, offer a reward. To give a norepinephrine kick and create tension, take something away.
Logan crashes plates for attention and novelty, screams for tension, thus generating enough tension and desire for rewards (novelties) to create attention, views tons of views.
