Vermithor in "House of the Dragon"

Vermithor, who is also called the ‘Bronze Fury,’ is one of the dragons in HBO’s “House of the Dragon.” It is a bronze dragon with tan wings and its rider’s name is Caraxes, and this dragon is instrumental in the Targaryen civil war called the Dance of the Dragons. Due to the given facts about Vermithor, his role in the series and the nature of the conflict, he is one of the characters that play an active role in the story.

Vermithor was born in 34 AC and he was one of the biggest dragons in the history, the second by size to Balerion and Vhagar. His first rider was King Jaehaerys I Targaryen, who was the longest reigning Targaryen King on the throne. The Conciliator or the Wise Jaehaerys, who was a king of the Seven Kingdoms, used Vermithor in his reign and brought prosperity to the kingdom.

Vermithor went without a rider after the death of King Jaehaerys in 103 AC. He lived in the dragon’s cave on Dragonstone, a volcanic island which was the traditional domain of Targaryen dynasty. Vermithor’s residence on Dragonstone, along with other dragons which were not claimed by anyone, was a great asset for the Blacks, the supporters of Rhaenyra Targaryen, who claimed the right for the Iron Throne.

The first season of the prequel of “Game of Thrones” titled “House of the Dragon” shows Prince Daemon Targaryen, played by Matt Smith, looking for Vermithor. An example of this is when Daemon meets Vermithor, which is a significant event that shows that the dragon can change the balance to Rhaenyra’s side. Daemon sings to Vermithor in High Valyrian, which is a smart move to gain the trust and support of one of the biggest dragons alive.

With the Dance of the Dragons approaching, stronger dragons are necessary. The “Sowing of the Seeds” or “Red Sowing” is started by Prince Jacaerys Velaryon to encourage dragonseeds, those with Targaryen or Valyrian blood, to try to tame the dragons that are not claimed. It is a very dangerous venture because most of the individuals who try to subdue the creatures end up dead.

Out of all the dragonseeds, the blacksmith’s bastard son, Hugh Hammer rises up as the successful rider of Vermithor. Hugh who wields a warhammer and takes the name Hugh Hammer on succeeds in taming the Bronze Fury becoming his second rider. This is important given that it places a powerful dragon on the Blacks’ side, adding force to the civil war.

During the Battle of the Gullet, Vermithor, ridden by Hugh Hammer, is a significant character. This naval battle involves the Blacks led by the forces of Rhaenyra and fights the Triarchy which is allied to the Greens. Vermithor’s firepower and combat skills assist in the destruction of the enemy’s ships, thus demonstrating the destructive capabilities of dragons in battle.

However, Hugh Hammer has not been known to be loyal to anyone or anything, especially not a club. During the First Battle of Tumbleton, Hugh turns traitor to the Blacks and joins the Greens with another dragonseed, Ulf White, who is partnered with Silverwing. Their betrayal results in a major triumph for the Greens, proving how unpredictable the wars of dragons are.

During the Second Battle of Tumbleton, Vermithor is slain. Although Vermithor is one of the largest and strongest dragons, he is eliminated during the battle, which is a rather dramatic and sad outcome for one of the most significant dragons during the Targaryen civil war.

This fact, along with the information about Vermithor’s participation in the Dance of the Dragons, proves that dragons played a central part in the Targaryen civil war. This makes him one of the most dangerous dragons of the war due to his huge size, fighting experience, and legendary background. The character Vermithor plays a major role in the war, he is involved in some of the major events of the war, both victories and betrayals.
