Dreamfyre: in "House of the Dragon"

Dreamfyre is one of the famous dragons seen in the show “House of the Dragon” released in 2022, which is a prequel to the famous “Game of Thrones” series. This article explores the background, meaning, and purpose of Dreamfyre in the series by referencing the extensive history created by George R. R. Martin in “Fire & Blood.”

Dreamfyre was born during the lifetime of Aegon the Conqueror which would make her one of the oldest dragons in the Targaryen line. It is said that she became close friends with Princess Rhaena Targaryen, the firstborn daughter of Aegon I Targaryen, when Rhaena was still only twelve years of age. This bond was the start of Dreamfyre’s existence and what was to be a long and exciting journey.

Dreamfyre was a major player during the period of the Targaryen dynasty and the period of turmoil. When her father, King Aenys I Targaryen, died, her uncle Maegor usurped the Iron Throne and Rhaena and Aegon Targaryen, Rhaena’s husband, fled King’s Landing with their dragons, Dreamfyre and Quicksilver. Aegon and Quicksilver were killed by Maegor, while Rhaena fled with Dreamfyre.

It was not surprising that Dreamfyre was renowned for her fertility, as she was known to have laid several clutches of eggs over the years. In the story of “House of the Dragon”, Dreamfyre is the dragon of Princess Helaena Targaryen, the daughter of King Viserys I Targaryen and Queen Alicent Hightower. Helaena is also shown to have a close relationship with Dreamfyre and the two are frequently shown sitting together in the Dragonpit.

Dreamfyre’s eggs are featured in the series of “House of the Dragon.” Daemon Targaryen takes one of the Dreamfyre’s eggs in the second episode.
