I was conjuring full Requiem for A Dream melancholia when I composed this piece on my compact travel modular during an inspiring sunset over a sprawling beach. Within the patch, my ever-present Mannequins Mangrove oscillates in oceanic subdivisions while a reticent melody is plucked from Plaits. Captured live with full view of an ominous looking ocean beneath an acquiescent, Aronofsky-worthy sky.
There is something about the process of manually tuning the oscillators in a modular synth that invites experimentation in subtle pitch ebb and flow that I'd likely never feel draw to in a more computer based, quantized environment. This duality of generative vs. sequenced idea is the heart of what makes modular synthesis so inspiring to me. The change to the B-section in this piece happens at a completely unusual spot that still catches me off guard, months later. I'd have it no other way.
