Broken
One of my personal favourites from the Comeback EP is the 2nd track called "Broken" as it represents the drama I was going through at the time. During my PhD years, I was a keen marathon runner but there was one marathon I had entered where the Universe had other plans for me. 3 weeks before the race itself in Berlin, I did a usual 12 mile training run and went to have a shower, getting ready to rest up... well, in the house I lived in at the time, the shower was downstairs at the end of the house, the bedrooms were upstairs.
So I started walking back up the stairs after my shower, wearing my towel and then I somehow got my foot caught in the towel as I was lifting my foot up. I stumbled forward, misplaced my foot and my whole body came crashing down on my middle toe as it got caught on the steep stairs going up... SNAP!
I had to go upstairs, wishfully thinking I could just put the toe back in to place but it was definitely pointing at a funny angle so had to be rushed to Accident and Emergency thanks to my flatmate Claire who was an angel that night. X-rays revealed a clean fracture on the toe and I was out of the running for the marathon (pun intended, unlike the broken toe).
This gave me enough time to think about what a wally I'd been and I made this track, Broken, to express the drama and anguish I was going through from that time. I think I just like the tension this one gives from the off, get those glowsticks out :)
