For the cinephiles amongst you - as well as my groupies - here's ten minutes of movie talk. Today, I recommend some awesome French classics and, as a bonus, I add in some movie history. These 6 films were released between 1939 and 1959. That might sound old too most of you. But some of the finest film are 'old' by now.
This post was inspired by this comment of on an earlier write up by me on Les Maitres du Temps ( Time Masters - René Laloux, 1982 ): "I watched Rififi last night by way of contrast (and to prove I'm not a francophobe) and it was a banger, show but don't tell, maybe a 25 minutes period of time where there was no talking, just men, hard men, Rififi men, going about the business of thieving jewels. Great stuff."
So , to prove that you're really not a francophobe - but indeed a francophile - give these films a watch. And, if you like what you see, be on the lookout for my upcoming movie posts.
The movies that I talk about are:
- La Regle du Jeu ( Jean Renoir, 1939)
- La Belle et la Bete ( Beauty and the Beast - Jean Cocteau, 1946) -
- La Salaire de la Peur - remade in 1977 as Sorcerer - & Les Diaboliques ( Henri-Georges Clouzot, 1953 and 1955 )
- L'Escaleur pour L'échafaud ( Elevator to the Gallows - Louis Malle, 1958 ) - with an improv jazz score by Miles Davis
- Les 400 Coups ( The 400 Blows - Francois Truffaut ( 1959 )
There's no spoilers in the audio. Not because I care about spoilers, I always judge for myself, but it's just my way of piquing your interest. Telling you just enough about a movie for you to want to see it.
For more details, I refer you to the audio.
