Hi Friends!
I'm creeping up on the two year mark of making content, and I finally took the plunge and upgraded from my iPhone! I spent countless hours researching the best camera and video equipment for vloggers and felt super overwhelmed at the MANY options available. I got some tips and advice from various video creators and think I have landed on the perfect setup for what I wanted. I just got everything in the mail today and thought I'd film a gear haul video to show you the setup I decided on and why I went with each item!
Here are the things that were most important to me when it came to updating my equipment:
- A lightweight camera body so it would be easy for travel.
- A flip screen so when i'm out and about filming, I can make sure that I'm in frame and in focus.
- The option for interchangeable lenses so I can grow with the camera and experiment with different looks and styles.
- A camera that is great for both photos and video.
- A mic jack so that I can get optimal audio. It literally blows my mind how many camera's don't have this!
Finding a camera that had all of these features was harder than I thought when you start digging into the many options available.
Most people would probably recommend getting the basics first and then expanding from there... but I decided to do things completely opposite! I figure that since I have never done much in terms of upgrading, and while I was already going to be in the mode of learning new things - that I just wanted to go all in and get all the accessories I think I need for an optimal setup. I did a ton of research and made a few decisions like getting an extra lens right out of the gate, and going for the more expensive microphone. The total bill was a rough pill to swallow - but I feel stoked to be able to bring my A-game.
While I was upgrading my camera situation - I decided to invest in two other areas of content creation as well. So far, I've just been editing my videos on Imovie, but I've decided to make the investment in Final Cut Pro so that I can start slicing and dicing more professional looking videos to match my new and improved footage!
I also recognize that there will be times I still want to use my phone to make content - and so I upgraded the microphone I use for that. I was actually introduced to this little Rode mic for Iphone's in Austin from Irina Litchfield! I noticed it on her phone and immediately asked her about it. It's an inexpensive and great little mic! I've been testing it out today and am super impressed.
In the video I go into a lot more detail of each item - but here's a quick snapshot of what I got! Follow the links under each photo if you want to check out the item on Amazon.
Shots of my New Gear!
I hope you guys enjoyed this gear haul video! I can't wait to start using my new equipment and start incorporating it into my content. I'm still a little intimidated by this fancy camera - but it will just take a little trial and error to figure it all out. I may share some gear review videos of my new equipment vs. the Iphone, some audio tests with and without the wind screen and all sorts of fun things like that. If there are any particular videos you guys are interested in seeing - let me know in the comments below!
