Dear all,
Today is a perfect gardening day! The weather is cloudy and my compost is ready to use!
For those who would like to learn how to make compost at home, it's extremely easy. All you need to do is throw all your uncooked organic waste in a bucket or on a pile, and wait until nature does its job. It's not complicated, and you don't need to understand the whole science behind it to make compost at home.
All you need to know is that in order to create a good compost pile, you need to mainly add greens (nitrogen) and browns (carbon). These are the most important ones, and even if you get the proportions "wrong", nature will still decompose it at some point. The only thing that changes is how long it will take. If you do it right, it will only take a few weeks.
Example of greens:
- fresh grass clippings
- veggie and fruit peels
- coffee grounds
Examples of browns:
- dry leafs
- wood chips
- dried grass clippings or hay
- paper or cardboard
Keep your pile moist, but not too wet. If it's too dry, it won't decompose fast enough. If it's too wet it will become stinky. It will be ready when it turns black and when you can't recognize any of what you've thrown into the pile.
Now they make these special buckets if you live in a city and want to keep it indoors. It's a great way to make use of your organic waste, even if it's just for your ornamental plants.
Have you tried making compost? How did it go?
