In another recent monetization policy update YouTube has further tighten the screws for new creators as you now need more than 4000 hours of watch time in addition to 1000 subscribers before you can make money on their platform.
...and in their words "to better protect creators"
Eventually the word will get out that YouTube is exploiting their position in the video content market and are effectively getting creators to make videos for free.
The new YouTube slogan should be:-
"Come for the rewards, and leave before getting any."
Because that's exactly what happens with new content creators. It's a real slog getting your first 100 subscribers on YouTube and it could take months, even if you're half decent. And a lot will give up even before reaching 1000 subs but will likely leave their content on the platform, effectively giving YouTube access to free content.
It's a really good business model and is getting better and better each time they tighten the screws on new content creators.
And sure being YouTube famous is still a dream, but everyone wants to get paid for their work.
So how can we get the message out there, that dTube could offer a better alternative?
Unfortunately, right now there are no guarantees on dTube either that they'll make money as dTube doesn't have a wide enough audience to support the variety of content creators that could be lured from YouTube.
But what comes first?
The Audience or the Creator?
Obviously, it's the creator but as mentioned earlier they'll need to get paid. So perhaps the content curators at dTube could start to spread the rewards a little thinner because a $30+ upvote is only reaching stuff they like. Rather than supporting the whole dTube community as a whole.
And yes I get it, you want to build some stars on the platform, and create the impression that dTube is the place to be. But if you truly want to be an alternative to YouTube you'll need to be a destination for creators and not viewers.
Remember creators will develop an audience, whereas viewers only consume resources on the platform.
So as you can see we have a healthy diversity on the platform but most aren't making more than a few cents for their work. And nobody is trying to be dTube famous here, so that only leaves making money as the 'carrot' and when they don't make any they'll stop.
I've seen it on YouTube and I'm sure I'll see it here too.
But this post isn't meant to be a dTube rant but rather I'm flagging another opportunity to lure the disgruntled content creators from YouTube.
However, they'll need a little more than chicken feed if you want them to begin their online careers here instead of YouTube.
Because once they realise they only make money in the first 7 days, and then only make a few cents on a video, they'll likely take their chances on YouTube instead, where evergreen content is rewarded for the life time of the channel.
I have an army of content creators I can tap into, but I'll need a strong argument to get them to switch as my reputation outside of Steemit is at risk. In the meantime I'll look at some other ways to get them on board, but it's likely to be a much slower path than directly with dTube.
