This documentary about homophobia in Russia explores how Vladimir Putin's politics, anti-gay laws, social hierarchy and toxic masculinity shapes lgbt rights abuse and discrimination of sexual minorities.
Over the past century, Russia has experienced numerous political, cultural, and demographic shocks. After going through revolutions, world wars, and radical economic shifts, Russia entered the 21st century with mixed baggage from various unsuccessful ideologies and national trauma. Years of political turbulence slowly began to change with the economic prosperity of the 2000s, which gave a sense of stability to people’s daily lives. But, unlike many Western European countries, the growth of the economy, didn’t make Russia’s culture any more tolerant.
In the last decade, Russia has demonstrated a distinctive trend of discrimination towards sexual minorities and an indifference to the LGBT struggle. With new discriminatory anti - gay laws and an increasing number of attacks on LGBT individuals and LGBT rights, Russia is experiencing a homophobic Renaissance. This leads to the questions of what caused it and why is Russia homophobic?
