The eruption has been gradually intensifying since yesterday: near continuous explosions generate an eruption column that is now rising to approx. 30,000 ft (9 km) altitude with the ash plume spreading east and south and forced the closure of Bali's and Lombok's airports today.
More evacuations have been ordered in the areas around the volcano, and light to moderate ash fall is occurring in downwind areas where people are advised to wear protecting masks.
PVMBG has raised the alert level of Agung to "awas" (4 on a scale of 1-4), and the exclusion zone is now 8-10 km wide.
The strong incandescence visible at its base confirms that the eruption is now in its magmatic stage. No significant earthquake activity is taking place - as the conduit is now open, the erupting magma does no longer need to break its path through rock layers inside the volcano.
